About this Qualification

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

At AFS Training and Consultancy, we use the best practices from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILOCOR) and the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation (ANZCOR) guidelines. You will be able to help injured family members, friends, workmates, clients and/or other members of your community.

First Aid is any emergency care given to an injured or ill person before professional medical help arrive (paramedic, doctor, nurse).

Become a confident first aid expert in responding to an emergency situation, dealing with a wide variety of emergencies and applying appropriate first aid procedures based on the latest best practice from the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines (ARC).

A snapshot of what you will learn:

  • How to comprehensively assess a casualty
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) operation
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Anaphylaxis and Asthma management
  • Safety procedures
  • Stress management techniques and aftercare support for rescuers and others
  • First aid techniques for handling fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains
  • Venomous bites, stings and poisons first aid

Pre-Course Requirements

As per the Australian Skills Quality Authority, it is mandatory that all individuals must be able to perform two full minutes of uninterrupted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) compressions on a manikin placed on the floor – to be deemed competent.

You need full access to internet–enabled devices for our online studies.

Entry Requirements

You will need to complete an online pre-course workbook and assessment before attending one of our practical sessions.

If you are unable to meet the full requirements of HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation unit of competency, we are unable to award you with your Statement of Attainment.

We will however award you with a Statement of Attendance and transcript of any skills and knowledge you are successful in achieving.

Delivery & Duration

Blend of self-paced online learning and face-to-face training.

Prior to attending the face-to-face component, students must complete the online learning component (depending on learning capability, please allow up to 5 hours; this can be done in one sitting or over several sessions).

This is then complimented with a 4-hour face-to-face practical assessment using simulated real-life scenarios on adult and infant manikins delivered by an industry-current registered nurse at AFS’s modern training facilities.

Group training can be delivered on-site at your workplace or at AFS facilities.
